Nancy Drew: Shadow at the Water’s Edge Review and Giveaway

First off let me tell you that I am thrilled to become a member of the AmbassadHER of Inspiration. Which means at least for the next year I will be working with Her Interactive as an Ambassador and bringing you loads of reviews and hopefully giveaways of Nancy Drew products! I am beyond happy to be able to do so, because Nancy Drew is a childhood friend of mine, and I thoroughly enjoy her. And I think she is still a good role model for girls in this day and age.

I recently got to try out the game Shadow at the Water’s Edge. Nancy Drew heads to Japan for her next adventure. Here is a little bio about the game:

Nestled into the foothills of majestic Mt. Hiei near Kyoto, this traditional ryokan (inn) has been run by the Shimizu family since the 1700s. Yet even with over 300 years of history breathing through these walls, it remained a relatively quiet paranormal site. That is, until a woman’s untimely death on the property grounds around five years ago. Since then, guests have regularly reported frightening encounters with a woman in white, her long black hair hanging down over her cloudy eyes. Her supernatural powers manifest in a variety of ways, from phantom shadows to full materialization, as she attempts to avenge the events that cut her life short. This is the ultimate destination in Japan for reliable ghost sightings and paranormal activities.

You get to meet the whole family that runs the ryokan. Learn a ton about Japanese culture as you do your detective work. The music is amazing in this game, very spooky and it got me pretty scared. I wouldn’t play this game in the dark by myself, cause I would be too freaked out! There are also cute little games that you can play, which is nanograms, sudoku and planograms. Very math and number oriented. I wasn’t a big fan of Sudoku but after I beat the 5 board Sudoku game I was pretty proud of myself. Just like Rentaro said I would be when I tried to get help from him haha. I learned how to do bento from Yumi! That was a ton of fun, I kept on doing it so I could get some phone charms for Nancy’s phone. The whole atmosphere of Shadows at the Water’s Edge was wonderful. That and the story kept me wanting to go go go in the game and see what was going on at the ryokan!

The only downsides about the game is that you can’t click through the talking. Some of the characters just talk to slow, and I was reading the dialog way faster than they were talking. But maybe that isn’t such a bad thing because I usually skip all of that and I may have missed something. Also the last nanogram, drove me crazy. I wish the numbers for that row or column would be crossed off or something when you get it correctly. I had to restart 2 times and finally got it on the 3rd try! I was so happy when that puzzle was over.
