Ready New YorkWith summer right around the corner, many New Yorkers are making plans to enjoy some summer fun. While you prepare your activities, also consider preparing for the upcoming hurricane season, June 1 to November 30, 2012. Contrary to popular belief, coastal storms and hurricanes CAN and DO impact New York City. Last year, Hurricane Irene caused damage in and around NYC forcing some New Yorkers to evacuate and causing many others to stay put for days.

I live an hour north of NYC and the damage in my area was astounding last year from Hurricane Irene. We didn’t have any damage but many others did. I know Washingtonville was hit very hard, and a beloved ice cream shop was covered in water over there! I was ready for anything coming my way because I had an hurricane emergency preparedness Go Bag. This bag isn’t just great for hurricanes though, blizzards or any type of disaster that would cause mayham and power lost.
Emergency Go Bag
The Go Bag includes gloves, batteries, flashlight, a small radio, a first aid kit, poncho and more! I have one in the house and one in the car. Now I have a third that I’m going to keep in the house too. It never hurts to have more then 1 bag in the house because you never know when you need more of the supplies. I feel a bit safer with these bags. Plus if we needed to get out of dodge I could just bring the bags with me!

NYC residents the OEM has a great site for just Coastal Storms and Hurricanes for NYC. It’s going to track storms and if they are heading up the cost there is a ton of information that you can garner for this site so you are prepared to get the heck out of there!

  20. It’s always a great idea to be prepared – have at least enough for your family to survive for 72 hours. Some people stay prepared for up to two weeks and some even longer than that. I consider 72 hours (3 days) to be a basic start for emergencies. Usually those kits for one or two people can be stored in a single backpack.
